Keywords: maritime transportation,
disruption, spatial simulation
Objective: Extend an existing simulation model
of global maritime shipping by adding geometries of a routing graph and hurricane
trajectories. Use the spatial simulation to evaluate the effect of heavy storms
on the timeliness of the shipments, which represent the global flow of goods from
a well-known retailer.
Short
description: The
existing model captures the global flow of material from ports of lading (mainly
Asia) to ports of unlading (US, Europe, Australia). It is validated using shipment
data from the retailer. Your task is to apply data from storm events
(hurricanes and typhoons), i.e. the track of the storm (trajectory) and the
affected area (polygons). Use it to model the effect of the events on maritime
transport. Quantify the delay of the shipments that is caused by storm events
in different regions having different magnitudes.
Start: Anytime
Prerequisites/qualification: Spatial simulation
